Overall aims

Policy
At Oxford School of English, we aim to equip all our students with the language and knowledge they need to be part of the modern globalised world. The personal, professional and academic development of our students is at the heart of our philosophy.

Communication

The English language is a means of communication, and communication is therefore central to our syllabus. The syllabus is designed to ensure that our students are able to communicate more effectively in English in any situation - in their home country and abroad, while travelling, studying or working. We believe that helping people to communicate more effectively across borders and cultures enhances our students' personal, academic and business achievements, and helps them to contribute to greater understanding within the global community.

Flexibility

All our courses are designed to meet the collective and individual needs of our learners, and although our courses follow a set scheme of work, informed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), there is in-built flexibility to enable the teachers and learners to mould the course to their needs and individual learning styles.

Differentiation

Whether a student is staying for one week or one year, our courses are designed to help them achieve their full potential in English. Our students come from across the world, from a range of backgrounds, and of all ages. We aim to include all individuals in all classes, and our courses are designed to meet a broad range of needs. Our teachers are aware of, and cater to, a range of learning styles and learning backgrounds, including those with Specific Learning Needs.

Goals

We believe it is important to set our students clear and achievable goals. All our students are given a scheme of work for their particular course. As our courses are based on the CEFR, all students are given a checklist of outcomes for their particular level of proficiency. These assist the students in mapping their own progress in English, as well as giving them aims for the future.

Qualifications

We believe that it is important for our students to have an externally-validated measure of their achievements to enable them to demonstrate their proficiency to education providers, employers and other caretakers. To this end, all students are encouraged to sit for an external English Language Examination during their time at the school. Our academic staff are always on hand to assist and advise in the application process, and students preparing for examinations are given the best possible preparation for them.

Community

As well as our students learning from us, we always try to learn from our students in return, allowing us to grow and develop as a school. We regard our school as a community which encourages people to realise their true potential. To help maintain this community, we treat all our learners, of whatever age, nationality or background, equally, and we aim to give all our learners the same excellent standard of education. In return, we expect our students to follow the same principles.

Beyond the classroom

We believe that learning should not be limited to the classroom. By giving our learners the tools to learn and acquire the language, we aim to give them the tools to continue their learning path after they have left the school.
